CAR were consulting engineers for JaK Studio’s winning entry to ‘The Huts’, a beach hut competition sponsored by Eastbourne Borough Council.
The JaK Studio design took inspiration, in both form and movement, from the binoculars that swivel on a post and are a familiar feature of seaside walks along the promenade. The hut, nicknamed the ‘Spyglass’, is built on a recessed turntable so that the picture window can be turned 180 degrees. The view can change from the sun rising over the sea in the morning to the lights of Eastbourne Pier in the evening.
Five winning designs will be built on the Eastbourne seafront, to the east of the pier, forming part of the bicycle route of the Coastal Culture Trail which links three award-winning galleries: Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne, De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill and Jerwood Gallery in Hastings.
