CAR director Philip Cooper was structural verification engineer for the courtyard installation at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. The work by Royal Academician Conrad Shawcross, consists of five steel ‘clouds’, over six metres high and weighing five tonnes each.
The sculptures of Conrad Shawcross RA explore subjects that lie on the borders of geometry and philosophy, physics and metaphysics. His installation titled ‘The Dappled Light of the Sun’ is made up of thousands of tetrahedrons.
Shawcross says, “The Greeks considered the tetrahedron to represent the very essence of matter. In this huge work I have taken this form as my ‘brick’, growing these chaotic, diverging forms that will float above the heads of visitors who will be able to wander beneath them”.
