Open Air Theatre Set Design

CAR’s Philip Cooper was the structural engineer for the giant mirror above the stage in Open Air Theatre’s production of Chekhov’s The Seagull in Regent’s Park, London. Designer Jon Bausor posed the question “God threw a mirror into the forest – can you hold it up?”

The Sunday Times said of his stage design, “some productions are setbound – this is an instance of one freed and set soaring by its location and design … the atmosphere of this Seagull alters and intensifies with the setting sun”.

With one of the largest auditoria in London, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre is the oldest, professional, permanent outdoor theatre in Britain and the annual 16-week season is attended by over 140,000 each year.
