Philip Cooper is a consulting engineer who combines practice with university teaching.  He received his BSc from the University of Leeds (1971) and MA from the University of Cambridge (1974) and began his career in research and teaching at the University’s Department of Architecture, later joining Harris & Sutherland in London. 

In 1986 he was appointed Professor of Structural Design at Leeds University, sponsored by the Institution of Structural Engineers.  Following several years combining this role with practice at the Cambridge office of Harris & Sutherland, he became a founding director of the Cambridge office of Scott Wilson (formerly Cameron Taylor) He was responsible for a wide range of projects undertaken in the office, specializing in buildings for the arts. 

Past projects include major residential and commercial developments for 13 Cambridge colleges, Ruskin Library, Lancaster University; Royal Observatory and Queen’s House, Greenwich; Hackney Empire Theatre, the University of the Arts, King’s Cross, and Café Royal, Piccadilly, London.

He is engineer to the Royal Academy of Arts in London, former member of the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England, Visiting Professor of Structural Design at Bath University and Lecturer at the University of Cambridge and the Architectural Association.  He is an expert in the conservation and restoration of historic structures but also an innovative designer using new materials.
